Which OS?
Which games?
Which changes did happen?
So anything a bit more useful ;)

hi
it seems that any dosbox games I've got installed trip out while loading
a number of blank screens flash up and then it crashes

I installed a number of windows updates earlier in the week - there were a bunch so I didn't take notice what they were individually

sorry, I don't know much

OK, a start ;)

Do I assume correctly Win10?
Do you get any error message?

To check for this, go into the folder were the game is installed, you shall find a file called dosboxNAME.conf

Open it with notepad (NO WORDPAD!)

You shall see something like this

mount C "..\Master of Orion"
c:
cls
orion.exe
exit

add before the exit

pause

so that it will look like this

mount C "..\Master of Orion"
c:
cls
orion.exe
pause
exit

Now save this and run the game again.
The window will stay open and might tell you an error message (do not press any key though, this will unpause)
EDIT: All under the assumption talking about GOG games here ;)

The DOS games on GOG are all delivered with a tool called the DOSBox Configurator. Under the Windows start menu, it's called just that under the game's start menu folder. If you're playing through Galaxy, it's under the "More" menu, "Other" sub-menu, and then "Graphic Mode Setup".

Under "Basic Settings", you'll see "Graphic mode" and a tickbox for "Full Screen". First try and deactivate full screen mode, and see if that helps. You can also try different graphic modes, but the default "surface" mode doesn't usually cause problems.

That'll help us find out whether the DOSBox is having a problem switching to full screen mode.

Also, what happens if you go into the game's directory (under Galaxy: More/Manage Installation/Show Folder), go into the DOSBOX folder and start dosbox.exe? Does it stay open?

Just out of the blue:

Do you have an Xbox one controller plugged in? (if so, please remove it)

Just a quick update, the problem has been solved with the help from a guy at GOG and for some reason having my Xbox One controller plugged into my computer was causing the problem. It's now fixed.

I know, hence I asked benchrisseb about it ;)

Seems to be quite fitting.

poor snowkatt ^^ - must feel totally hopeless not being able to destroy the dosbox on purpose :D.
Funnily enough i have win 10 and a xbox controller (wireless one though - not sure if this makes a difference and a 3rd party dongle) and didn't have the problem yet
